A Major Breakthrough In The Treatment Of Aids: Virus Disappeared In 5 Patients (+Video)

SCIENTISTS HAVE MADE A MAJOR STEP IN THE FIGHT AGAINST HIV. ALTHOUGH IT IS ONGOING RESEARCH, ITS RESULTS THAT CAN DIRECT FURTHER STUDY. NEW TREATMENT ON THE BASIS VACCINE GIVES HOPE TO PEOPLE INFECTED WITH HIV WILL NO LONGER HAVE TO TAKE DAILY THERAPY.

Experts have combined two new vaccine against HIV with a drug that is normally used for cancer, in an experimental treatment that lasted three years at the Research Institute “IrsiCaixa Aids” in Barcelona.

After received therapy, the virus could no longer be detected in five of 24 patients, and its spread has prevented the immune system of patients, says New Scientist. One of them isn’t using drug against HIV for seven months because the tests are negative.

Scientist who led the project, Beatriz Mote, said that her team is on track to discover a treatment that could be an alternative to antiretroviral drugs against AIDS (ART).

According to UN data, about 18 million people – half of those worldwide living with HIV, taking ART to slow the progression of the infection. However, these drugs are expensive and can have very unpleasant side effects, and patients need to take them every day.

Mitchell Warren, executive director of the nonprofit organization Avak which provide patients  with vaccines, told The Independent that the study was conducted on too small a sample in order that couldn’t be addressed concrete conclusions, but that their discovery is interesting and important. He added that this is a case of therapeutic vaccines intended already infected people.

Oktorka Mote and her team gave the patients with diagnosed HIV combination vaccine that stimulates the growth of white blood cells that recognize and destroy cells infected with the virus.

The respondents were taking ART for three years, and during that time the health of their immune system was monitored.
Then, 15 patients received a higher dose of a new combination vaccine that is literally ‘washed’ virus from the tissues.

The virus quickly returned and again began to spread in 10 patients, but they continued to take ART, while five patients the finding was negative.

In particular there was no more need for daily medication for several weeks, and in one case even for seven months.
