How to Treat Cystic Acne at Home

Cystic acne manifests itself as cysts or bumps beneath the surface of the skin, while other kinds of acne, such as whiteheads or blackheads, feature clear heads on the pimples. Cystic acne does not. Often, cystic acne is painful and sensitive to touch. A range of issues, such as hormonal fluctuations, bacteria and diet, can cause it to develop. Thankfully, there are various techniques you can do at home to treat cystic acne.

Things You'll Need
  • Antibacterial cleanser
  • Scrub
  • Deep-cleaning mask
  • Acne treatment cream
  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • Washcloth
Step 1:
Wash the area twice daily, using an antibacterial cleanser. Bacteria greatly worsens cystic acne, often prolonging its life. Keep the area free from makeup, sweat, excess oil and bacteria by cleansing twice daily.

Step 2:
Use a deep-cleaning mask on the affected skin. Choose a mask that contains ingredients such as mud or citric acid. These ingredients dry out oily skin, helping to eliminate cystic acne.

Step 3:
Apply a thin layer of acne treatment cream to your cystic acne. Opt for a cream that contains benzoyl peroxide, an ingredient commonly used to combat acne. You can find various benzoyl peroxide creams in most cosmetic and drug stores.

Step 4:
Mix equal parts baking soda and water, creating a paste. Apply the paste to your cystic acne. Let it remain on the area for approximately 20 minutes before rinsing. The baking soda will absorb excess oil and eliminate bacteria, helping your cystic acne to disappear more quickly.

Step 5:
Eat a healthy diet. Solid nutrition is essential to healthy skin. Get as many vitamins and nutrients as possible from fresh, natural foods. Also, drink at least 64 oz. water daily to keep skin hydrated and healthy.

Step 6:
Place a hot compress on your cystic acne. The heat will help to pull pus out from beneath the skin's surface. It will also reduce swelling and help your cystic acne to be less noticeable. You can simply soak a washcloth in hot water and hold it on the affected area for approximately 10 minutes.
